It’s important to keep your orthodontic appliance in tip-top shape so you can achieve the straight and beautiful smile you deserve. However, there are things that can break your brackets and delay your smile transformation progress. When this happens, it’s best to take the necessary steps to improve the situation. Those steps are:

Step No. 1: Assess the damage. The first thing to check is if the bracket is still attached to the wire. If it is, leave it in place and cover it with orthodontic wax. The wax will keep the bracket from sliding and it will also make your appliance more comfortable for you. If the bracket is not attached to the wire, remove it, keep it in a safe place, and bring it into the office with you. If the bracket is still attached to the wire but it is out of place, slide it back to where it belongs with a cotton swab.

Step No. 2: Do your best to control the situation. Oftentimes, a broken bracket makes a wire protrude out of place. If this happens, it’s best to clip the wire with a pair of fingernail clippers. As you do this, make sure to clip the wire as close to the bracket as possible. This will help you prevent cuts inside your mouth.

Step No. 3: Make an appointment with Dr. Joseph P. Goodson as soon as you get the chance. If you delay treatment, your smile transformation could also be delayed. So, don’t be hesitant in calling our office. When you do, make sure you explain the situation to our team.
