Have you recently completed orthodontic treatment in Austin, Texas? If so, good for you! Now you have the straight and beautiful smile you’ve always wanted. In order to keep that smile, there are things you need to do on a regular basis to keep your teeth, gums, and oral health in tip-top shape. To help you know a little more, Dr. Joseph P. Goodson and our orthodontic team would like to share those tips with you.

Tip No. 1: Wear your retainer – If you fail to wear your retainer as recommended, there is a high chance your teeth will shift back into their original positions. This is because there is still tension in the periodontal ligaments after you remove your braces. So, make sure you wear your retainer or you might return to the not-so-aligned smile you despised before orthodontic treatment.

Tip No. 2: Keep up on oral hygiene – Remember to brush twice a day (every morning and every night), floss once a day (preferably at night when you’re done eating for the day), and rinse your mouth daily. But, more importantly, you need to schedule a dental cleaning with your dentist as soon as possible. This is an important step because there is a high chance there are areas of your smile that were neglected while you aligned your teeth. During your appointment, your dental team will deeply clean those nooks and crannies and reduce your chances of experiencing any dental problems, like tooth decay and gum disease.

Tip No. 3: Wait to whiten – If you’re interested in brightening your smile, it’s best to wait at least a month before you do so. Waiting will give the newly exposed enamel the chance to strengthen and become less sensitive.
