If you want a top-notch oral health when you align your smile with braces, then you need to prevent dental issues as much as possible. One dental issue to avoid is enamel erosion. Enamel erosion occurs when acid attacks the teeth and wears down the tooth enamel. This makes the teeth prone to tooth decay and tooth fractures. To help you avoid this dental issue, our orthodontist, Dr. Joseph P. Goodson, encourages you to do the following things:
-Avoid acidic foods and beverages: Consuming acidic foods and beverages exposes your teeth to the acid that can harm them. So, it’s best to avoid these products as much as possible. If you do happen to consume some, make sure to rinse your mouth with water as soon as possible.
-Wait to brush your teeth: If you have an acidic food or drink, please wait 30 minutes to brush your teeth. This is recommended because if you brush immediately, the enamel is vulnerable to the acid and the bristles just worsen the damage. If anything, rinse with water and then brush at the appropriate time.
-Use fluoride: Fluoride is a natural mineral that can be found in toothpaste, mouthwash, tap water, and professional fluoride treatments. This mineral strengthens the tooth enamel and helps you avoid enamel erosion. So, do your best to expose your teeth to fluoride regularly.
