Joseph P. Goodson DMD, MS provides early orthodontic treatments to help your child begin achieving a healthy smile. Early orthodontic treatment not only helps to prevent future problems, but also saves time and money in future treatments. We welcome you to call us at 512-258-6683 to learn more about children’s orthodontics in Austin, Texas, and to schedule your child’s appointment with our experienced orthodontist.
Early evaluation provides us with timely detection of problems as well as greater opportunity to provide effective treatments. Our orthodontist can guide growth and development of your child’s teeth and jaws, preventing serious problems later. When no treatment is needed, our orthodontist can monitor your child’s growth and development, and begin treatments when they become necessary.
The American Association of Orthodontist recommends that your child’s initial orthodontic evaluation should occur at the age of 7, or at the first sign of orthodontic problems. Though our orthodontist can enhance your smile at any age, beginning treatments at a young age produces a greater result with the least amount of time and expenses. At age 7, orthodontic care may not be necessary, but careful examination can help our orthodontist determine when the best time to begin treatment would be.
By age 7, the first adult molars erupt, establishing the back bite. Our orthodontist will evaluate the front-to-back and side-to-side tooth relationships for crowding, gummy smiles, overbites, open bites, or other types of bad bites (malocclusion). If necessary, he will provide interceptive treatments to help your child’s teeth and bite develop properly. Interceptive treatments include:
- Creating room for crowded, erupting teeth
- Creating facial symmetry through influencing jaw growth
- Reducing the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth
- Preserving space for teeth that have not yet erupted
- Reducing the need for tooth extractions in the future
- Reducing the length of treatment time with braces
When you bring your child to our comfortable office, Dr. Joseph P. Goodson will be able to determine what, if any, treatment is needed, and when it should begin, and will create a personalized treatment plan to provide excellent results. Feel free to contact our practice today to make your child’s appointment with our caring orthodontist and learn more about early orthodontic treatment.
