There are many different parts to your braces. Dr. Joseph P. Goodson has provided the following information to help you understand your appliance. For more information about braces in Austin, Texas, please contact our office at 512-258-6683.
Band are a ring of metal which fit around the molars and sometimes the premolars. The bands are selected from a range of sizes in order to find the tightest fitting band. They are sealed in place using dental cement that contains fluoride to prevent decalcification during your treatment.
The brackets of braces hold the archwire against each tooth. The archwire fits into a slot in the bracket. Brackets may be attached directly to each tooth, or to a band.
The main wires, or archwires, are shaped specifically to fit around the arch into the bracket slots. The pressure from the archwire causes pressure to be applied to the teeth by the braces, and guides the direction of tooth movement.
An elastic tie is the tiny rubber band that ties the archwire into the bracket.
Hooks are small attachments on the brackets used to attach the elastics (rubber bands).
The coil spring fits between brackets and over the archwire.
